Privacy Policy
I collect as little personal data as possible. This page explains what I collect, why, and what choices you have. If anything here is unclear, email me and I’ll translate it into normal human language.
Who I am
This website is run by Martyn D Green (an individual). In GDPR terms, that makes me the data controller for this site.
Contact for privacy questions or requests: admin@martyndgreen.com
What data I collect
- Newsletter subscriptions (via Substack): your email address, and any details you choose to provide when subscribing.
- Messages you send me: if you email me, I’ll receive your email address and whatever you include in the message.
- Basic website logs (via my hosting provider): like most websites, the server may record technical information such as your IP address, browser type, and the date/time of your visit. This helps keep the site working and secure.
What I don’t do
- I don’t sell your data.
- I don’t run targeted advertising on this site.
- I don’t use analytics tools (like Google Analytics) at the time of writing.
Why I collect it (and the lawful basis)
- Newsletter: I use your email to send the newsletter you asked for. Lawful basis: consent.
- Emails to me: I use your email to reply. Lawful basis: legitimate interests (basic communication).
- Server logs: used for security, preventing abuse, and keeping the site stable. Lawful basis: legitimate interests.
Newsletter (Substack)
Newsletter subscriptions are handled by Substack. When you subscribe using the embedded form on my site, your details are processed by Substack so they can manage subscriptions, send emails, and handle unsubscribes.
Substack acts as a service provider (processor) for newsletter delivery. If you prefer, you can subscribe directly on Substack rather than through the embed.
Affiliate links (Amazon)
Some links on this site may be affiliate links (for example, to Amazon). If you click an affiliate link and later make a purchase, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.
Amazon may use cookies or similar technologies to track referrals after you click an affiliate link. I don’t receive any personal details about you from Amazon — only aggregated reporting (for example, that a referral occurred).
Cookies
This site itself doesn’t intentionally set cookies for tracking or analytics. However:
- Substack embed: Substack may set cookies or use similar technologies within the embedded signup frame.
- Affiliate links: a retailer (such as Amazon) may set cookies after you click an affiliate link.
If you want to avoid this, you can adjust browser settings to block cookies, or use privacy-focused browser tools.
Who I share data with
- Substack (newsletter subscriptions and email delivery).
- Bluehost (website hosting and server logs).
- Retailers you choose to click through to (e.g., Amazon) if you follow affiliate links.
International visitors & transfers
I’m based in the UK, but this site is accessible internationally (including the USA, Canada, Australia, and the EU/EEA). Some of the service providers I use may process data outside your country.
Where data is transferred internationally, those providers typically rely on recognised safeguards (such as contractual protections) to help keep personal data protected.
How long I keep data
- Newsletter: until you unsubscribe (or until the newsletter service deletes inactive subscribers under its own policies).
- Emails: as long as reasonably necessary to handle the conversation, then archived or deleted periodically.
- Server logs: retained according to my host’s standard retention periods.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to:
- request access to personal data I hold about you
- request correction of inaccurate data
- request deletion of your data
- object to certain processing
- withdraw consent (for newsletter emails) at any time
To make a request, email admin@martyndgreen.com.
Complaints
If you’re unhappy with how I handle your data, please email me first and I’ll do my best to fix it. You also have the right to complain to the UK regulator, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
Changes to this policy
If I change how this site works (for example, if I add analytics), I’ll update this policy accordingly.
